Tornados Take Championship at Ripken’s Complex
The Charlottesville Tornados, a travel baseball club composed of the best youth players in the Louisa, McIntire, Central, Monticello, Northside, Cove Creek, and Peachtree Little Leagues won the 13-and-under team championship at Cal Ripken’s youth baseball complex in Aberdeen, Maryland, the weekend of May 30 and 31.
The 13U team went undefeated with wins over the New York Spartans, Pearl River Yankees, Tri-State Arsenal (a team formed with kids from three states), Diamond Pros baseball, New York All Stars, and the Clarkstown Stars out of Tennessee.
The Tornados club has two teams this season: a 12-and-under team and a 13-and-under team. Both teams play a roughly 50-game schedule against teams from all over Virginia and up and down the east coast. Last season, the club went to Cooperstown, New York for a weeklong tournament against teams from all over the country. The Tornados play at the highest level of travel baseball, the AAA division. The top 30 percent of travel teams play in the AAA division. The club was started by George Morris and Jeff Willy four years ago.
The 12-year-old team captured the Batter’s Box Stampede tournament held in Roanoke May 2 and 3. The following weekend, the 12U and 13U teams both won the Virginia State Warm Up tournament held in Salem.
The 12U has three players from Crozet on the team: Tanner Morris, Jacob Rich, and Dylan Weiss. The 13U has three players from Crozet on the team: Logan Ebanks, Parker Morris, and Eli Sumpter.
