Patterson’s Flower Shop Becomes Couture Design

Danny and Linda Patterson, whose flower service was hailed and admired far beyond western Albemarle, quietly transferred their shop to Ken Ward and Henry Burrell Nov. 1, 2009 and are now retired.

Ward, who will handle the flower arrangement side (Burrell will handle the business side), worked for Patterson’s until he went on his own five years ago and began operating out of his house in Afton.

“We have been talking about it for quite a few years,” he said. “When the price got right, I jumped. Danny tipped his hat and bowed out gracefully.”

Couture Design—its motto is “a sustainable flower boutique”—will continue to offer the services Patterson had and the store’s staff is all staying on. The shop’s phone number is the same. Ward said they would buy from local growers, those within 100 miles, as long as the season allows and buy wholesale flowers out-of-season.

  2. I stopped at Couture Design on short notice Sat morning en route to Pennsylvania to visit family who had an unexpected death. Henry put together a lovely bouquet of blue and yellow cut hydrangeas and spider mums, and it looked beautiful. He positioned the vase in a sturdy box for transporting and it arrived fresh and in tact.

    I will spread the word to friends of the wonderful personal service I received. I will continue to use Couture Design for my future fresh flower orders. Thanks and best of luck to you!!!

  3. We had a rehearsal dinner on June 24, 2011 for my daughter-in-law and my son. Ken Ward and his staff at Couture Design were in charge of the flowers that evening. We were so very happy with the flower arrangements, both the individual table arrangements and the large center bouquet on the buffet table!! Prior to the dinner, we were able to send digital pictures of the table linens we were using and to make suggestions for the flowers and colors we were interested in using. Ken took the time to meet with us prior to the event with a prototype ready for us to see. He was very professional in working with us. The flowers were everything we expected and more! They were gorgeous and very fragrant! Thank you for helping to make the evening special!
