Crozet’s Virgin of Guadalupe Procession
Crozetians of Mexican descent carried a statute of the Virgin of Guadalupe, the patron saint of the Americas, from Orchard Acres to the Crozet Moose Lodge Dec. 11 singing and praying as they went. The procession and celebration to mark the vigil of her feast day on Dec. 12 are traditional. This is the second year that the procession has been held in Crozet. It commemorates the apparition of the Virgin Mary before Juan Diego, a converted Aztec peasant, in 1531, and the miracle in which a permanent image of her appearance was left on his cloak. The Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico City, where the cloak is housed, is the most visited Catholic pilgrimage site in the world.
