Large signs on Route 151 in Afton, posted by the Virginia Department of Transportation, are announcing the possibility of adding a left-turn lane and a right-turn taper on Route 151 at its intersection with Route 635.
“This was one of the things that has come out of the accident that occurred two years ago,” said Paula Jones, public affairs manager for the Lynchburg District of VDOT. “VDOT, local police and area citizens held meetings and this was one of the things that was suggested.”
The construction timeline calls for advertising for bids on the project in June 2010 and completion the following spring. It would be a federally funded safety project.
The accident that occurred two years ago resulted in the death of a mother and two children and was one of several that occurred in 2007 along Route 151.
