The Warrior volleyball teams took a step in the right direction in their first real test of the 2009 season. Hosting Albemarle in the regular season debut August 26, the JV and varsity squads swept the Patriots. The JV picked up where they left off last season when they were undefeated and the varsity looked to avenge their loss to the eventual 2008 AAA state champs.
With high expectations and plenty of anticipation the varsity team took the floor after watching the underclassmen cruise past the Patriots. The team features eight seniors this year and plenty of depth. Freshman Allie Nicholson started along with Sophomore Riley Martin and sophomore Katie Rossberg contributed as well.
But the night belonged to the seniors. Senior Sara Harper led the way with ten kills and ten points while Chastity Lacy and Amanda Gough had five kills apiece. Lacy and Gough also played well at the net defending the Patriots. Kristin Pack and Elizabeth Via played great backrow defending the Patriots hard hitters. Pack led the Warriors with numerous tough digs and Via played solidly with good passing and serving. Riley Martin tallied 13 assists and senior Megan Adams added 10 of her own.
Setting the Warrior hitters consistently and with precision, Martin and Adams gave the Western frontline ample opportunity to score and they did. Western won the first set 25-19, set two 25-20, and set three 25-22. With a big opening win the Warriors get a two-week break before getting into the Jefferson District schedule.
They will play on the road back-to-back nights next week. On Wednesday night they play at Goochland County High School (a new district member), and on Thursday the Warriors travel to Fluvanna to take on their district arch-rival Flucos. With seven straight district titles and two consecutive state playoff berths, the Warriors are looking forward to a great year. Good luck and go get ’em ladies.
