The first bridge on Sugar Hollow Road will be replaced in the next few months. Water draining through the bridge deck has corroded the bridge’s steel beams. New beams will be installed. The bridge’s approaches will be widened to allow trailers and larger vehicles like buses to make the 90-degree turn onto the bridge more easily. The bridge will remain one-lane after the repairs are made. The bridge decking, treated 5-by-10 timbers, will all be replaced. Plans call for the tops of two piers in Moormans River to be cut down and rebuilt. Once the deck is removed, the bridge will be closed for about one month, VDOT leadman John Burton estimated. “Once you’re out of the mud, it’s a piece of cake,” he said of the job. The detour will be via Browns Gap Turnpike [Rt. 810] to Break Heart Road/Sugar Ridge Road.
