crozet-health-fairDespite the very cold weather Oct. 18, the inaugural Crozet Health Fair drew 485 people to Crozet Baptist Church’s fellowship hall to meet Crozet area health care providers and get free health screenings. Forty-three area businesses participated.

Pat Pleasants (photo at right) of Crozet had her blood pressure checked by Susan Fink, nurse for Dr. Alexander Saloman at Crozet Internal Medicine PLC, who first proposed the idea of the fair. “Crozet needs more of this,” said Pleasants (whose blood pressure was fine).

“We had no idea what to expect,” said Dr. Shannon Franklin of Crozet Eyecare, one of the event’s organizers. She said she had found some people with high fluid pressure in their eyes, a symptom of glaucoma.

Dr. Marketa Leisure of Crozet Pediatrics (formerly known as Crozet Children’s Health Center) said she had given flu shots to the children of one family who recently moved to town and have no health insurance.

“We’ve found people with health problems, mainly because they have been sharing with us,” she said. “We’ll do this again.”

The fair was sponsored by the Crozet Business Networking Group and the Crozet Baptist Church Nursing Ministry. The event included a one-mile family fun walk/run.
