Western Albemarle’s varsity field hockey team captured the Jefferson District and Region ll championships last month and several players received district and regional honors, including L.P. Desch, Lindsey Gibson, Jordan Haws, Moira Wright, Olivia Hajek and Stewart Summers.
Western ran the table in the district, winning all 14 regular season contests and the district tournament. Western beat Charlottesville in the semi-finals to set up a clash with Orange County. The match proved to be a test of two wills. The Warriors prevailed over Orange for the third time this season to claim the district title.
But these familiar foes weren’t finished with each other just yet. In the Region II championship WAHS and OCHS would face off again. With talented senior goalie Lindsay Gibson, the Warriors pitched another shutout, beating Orange 2-0. The Warriors run ended in the first round of the state championship where they were knocked out by James Monroe High School [Fredericksburg].
