Harold Robert Johnson of Afton died April 9, 2011. He was born in Battle Creek, Michigan on June 20, 1935 and graduated from Michigan State University in 1957 with BA in Hotel & Restaurant Administration. He is survived by his wife Kathy, seven children, a sister, nieces, nephews and friends.

Johnson spent 20 years in the restaurant business, later pursuing other interests, working as a lineman for the KATY Railroad, a potter, a teacher, artist, and actor. He appeared in three movies and more than 225 mystery productions—primarily in Michigan.

After spending more than 20 years in the Charlevoix, Michigan area, in 2005 Johnson and his wife moved to her family’s home on Plank Road in Afton. He was a longtime hospital volunteer while in Michigan, a Master Gardener, and a member of the Charlevoix Area Garden Club.  After moving to Virginia he became a member of the Kiwanis Club of Waynesboro, a volunteer for the Wayne Theatre Alliance and volunteered as an Ambassador for the Greater Augusta Regional Chamber.  He loved Virginia and the gardens at his home on not far from Batesville.

Memorials are suggested to the Wayne Theatre Alliance, UVA Hospital Cardiac Department or the donor’s charity of choice. He was a tissue and eye donor through LifeMet Health (800-847-7831). A memorial service will be held at his home this summer.
