Following a report from the state medical examiner, Albemarle County police have declared the tragic death of Margaret Louise Hollifield an accident. She died of a gunshot at her family’s residence in the 1400 block of MacAllister Lane on Tuesday May 21 at about 10 a.m.
Margaret, known as Maggie, is the daughter of Paul and Anne Hollifield, the third of their four children. Paul Hollifield is the pastor at Commonwealth Christian Community church (formerly Victory Hill Church of God) and their home is next to the Open Door Ministry Center off St. George Avenue. The Hollifields moved to Crozet last fall when Hollifield took up his pastor duties at the church.
Police gave no further details on the accident. On the day it happened they said that “a male juvenile” had fired the gun. The next day the police department’s crime mapping website referred to the incident as a case of “negligent manslaughter.”
The Hollifields have asked that mourners who wish to make donations make them to the Maggie Hollifield Youth Camp Scholarship Fund, which will support campers at the Church of God’s youth camp in Roanoke. Make checks payable to Church of God State Fund and mail them to P.O. Box 7547, Roanoke, VA 24019. Donations can also be made online at www.vacog.com.
