Claire Sonen passed away peacefully on October 7, 2018, at home in Crozet surrounded by her husband of 59 years and her three children.
Claire was born in 1933 in Reading, Pennsylvania, the daughter of Sylvester and Margaret Henry. She graduated from Reading High School in 1951 and worked for several years in the office of the Berkshire Knitting Mills.
Claire married Stewart Sonen in 1959, and soon afterward they moved to western Pennsylvania, settling on a small farm near Franklin, PA, where they raised three children; Chris (now of Piedmont, SC), Heidi (Crozet, VA) and Kurt (Ann Arbor, MI). Claire quickly settled into farm life and became an enthusiastic chef and gardener, known for her vegetables, flowers, and blueberries. Claire enjoyed working for several years as a teacher’s aide in Utica Elementary School. Claire had a very strong lifelong bond with her father Sylvester who lived to be 101 years old.
She enjoyed travel and camping with her husband and they were avid members of the Air Stream club, participating in rallies across the U.S.
Claire moved to Crozet in 2012 and spent her final years at Claire’s Cottage where she marveled in the beauty of nature. She was a kind soul who had a smile for everyone she met. She is survived by her husband, three children, eight grandchildren and Tiger, her favorite pussycat.
The family would like to thank the many kind residents of Crozet who made Claire feel so welcome. A special “thank you” is owed to her devoted helpers over the past few years. The family asks that gifts of remembrance be made to Meals on Wheels.
