Karen Schultz Bain, of Afton, Virginia, died peacefully in her sleep at home on July 18, 2021 after a three-year struggle with dementia. She was born on May 17, 1940 in Crozet, Virginia, to Harry Franklin Schultz and Mary Emily Murray, the third of four daughters in her family. She was preceded in death by her parents and her sisters, Anne, and Jane. She is survived by her husband, Edward, their children, Matthew, Elizabeth, Andrew, Margaret, and her sister, Harriett Schultz.

Kay was a graduate of Albemarle High School and Mary Baldwin College. She worked in the Admissions Office at Mary Baldwin College, as a staff writer for the Richmond News Leader, and in Information Services at the University of Virginia before her many years as mother and homemaker to her family.

Kay’s lifelong love of books and words fed her innate curiosity about the natural world and her family’s deep roots in the local land. She loved the earth, and everything about it fascinated her. Her many cats and dogs were constant companions and brought her great joy.

The family thanks Dr. Lindsey Neal, Legacy Hospice, and her caregivers, Dawn Nowell, Linda Marsh, and Tyshenia Terrell for their care of Kay during her illness. Cremation Society of Virginia is in charge of arrangements. There will be no service. Memorial donations may be made to The Nature Camp Foundation via www.naturecampfoundation.org/give or The Nature Camp Foundation, PO Box 265, Studley, VA 23162.
