Majorie (Polly) Witt Dobbins

Update: A memorial sevice for Ms. Dobbins will be held on Friday, May 27, 2022 at 10:30 a.m. at Riverside Cemetery in Charlottesville, VA.

Marjorie (Polly) Witt Dobbins passed away on Oct. 17. She was born on Oct. 19. 1924 in Crane, Va. 

She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles William Dobbins Jr., her parents, Meta Ellinger Witt and Charles Fitzhugh Witt of Greenwood. She was also preceded in death by her sisters Elizabeth Gavin, Josephine Whitaker and brother Charles Witt Jr. 

She is survived by daughter Polly D. McElfish (Richard), son Douglas W. Dobbins, partner Michael A. Dokich, granddaughter Amanda H. Pennock (Michael), grandson Richard Hunter McElfish (Melissa) and one great grandson, William M. Pennock, as well as four nephews and one niece. 

Marjorie was her given name but her Uncle Arthur nicknamed her Polly and it stuck. She grew up in Greenwood and graduated from Greenwood High School and business school in Charlottesville. Following her husband as he moved with C&O railroad, she also lived in Waynesboro, Charlottesville, Ivy and finally Crozet. 

Marjorie worked for Crozet Insurance and was a teacher’s aide for Albemarle County Schools at Murray Elementary. She was a member of Tabor Presbyterian church in Crozet where she was married in 1944. She lived through the depression, through a world war and into the digital age. She loved her family fiercely, especially her grandchildren and great grandson! She was the cool grandma who was  known to assist in “special drink” buying while they were at UVA and JMU. Marjorie moved to Chesterfield. seven years ago to be closer to family. We will miss you so so much, NaNa!
