America’s Favorite House: George Washington’s Mount Vernon in the American Imagination
Thursday, May 23rd
The Cornell Entrance Gallery
Lydia Mattice Brandt, PhD joined the faculty in the School of Visual Art and Design at the University of South Carolina’s Columbia campus in 2011 and was promoted to associate professor in 2017. The University of Virginia Press published her first book, First in the Homes of His Countrymen: George Washington’s Mount Vernon in the American Imagination in 2016. It recently received the Henry-Russell Hitchcock Award from the Victorian Society in America.
Over the past two hundred years, Americans have reproduced George Washington’s Mount Vernon plantation house more often, and in a greater variety of media, than any of their country’s other historic buildings. This lecture will chronicle America’s obsession with the first president’s iconic home through advertising, prints, paintings, popular literature, and the full-scale replication of its architecture.
Meet the author at a post-lecture social. Books will be available for purchase and signing.
