East West Schism Dialogue
July 13, 2018 @ 6:00 pm - 9:00 pm

St. Nicholas Orthodox Church in Greenwood will host its third annual East-West Encounter in conjunction with St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church of Charlottesville, on Friday, July 13, on the theme of human life as a sacred gift. The event is held in mid-July in commemoration of the anniversary of the Great Schism in 1054, which resulted in the separation of the Churches of the Christian East from the West. This year’s discussion will focus on the Right to Life, and the witness of the Christian churches from the earliest centuries, to the value of every human life.
The speaker will be Jim Jatras, J.D., a key writer of an amicus brief submitted to the U.S. Supreme Court, advocating the rationale from an Orthodox perspective. A response will be offered by Dr. Karen Poehailos, Medical Director of the Pregnancy Centers of Central Virginia, who will speak to the ways that churches can live out this belief in practice.
The evening will begin at 6 p.m. with an Orthodox prayer intercession prayer service for the preservation of human life, followed by a time of fellowship (light refreshments). The presentation will begin at 7 p.m., and conclude by 8:45. For more information, visit stnich olasorthodoxchurch.com.
