Patrick Ryan, a semi-retired optometrist, has always had a strong interest in the visual arts. Weekends are often spent visiting museums and attending art shows. His appreciation of the arts grew even more after watching his daughter Calli Ryan pursue an MFA in painting. However, the ultimate inspiration was seeing works of blown glass in museums and watching the process of blowing and manipulating hot glass.
“I enjoy both the technical aspect and the science behind the physical properties of glass as well as the actual hands-on molding, shaping, and combining of colors. Artistically, I love the way glass has the ability to show colors in such an extremely vibrant way. Each time I finish a piece, I am amazed at the striking contrast between the crystal-clear areas and the colors. My focus now is exploring that fascinating interaction between light, color, and clear space in my pieces.”
Pat’s glass work can be seen at Crossroads Art Center in Richmond, VA.
