Grape & Grain Exchange, a Charlottesville wine and beer shop known for its small-producer focus, is expanding to Old Trail Village with a community-centered second location slated to open in January 2027.
Owner Dhruman Patel launched the original West Main Street store in February 2024 with his parents and brother, drawing on his family’s long history in retail, which includes ownership of the nearby Mini Mart.
Instead of a traditional convenience store model, Patel envisioned a place built around carefully chosen bottles and conversations about wine.
“The goal here will be to have bottles that people haven’t seen ever before,” he said. “You go to a Harris Teeter and you’ll see all the same bottles—that’s fine. My vision is not having the same mainstream wines and emphasizing small producers and unique varietals.”
Grape & Grain Exchange’s Old Trail location is designed to offer a neighborhood feel that the Charlottesville store can’t always provide. Rather than serving mostly students and hotel traffic, Patel hopes to see familiar faces week after week.
“In a community-based area, you can develop more relationships,” Patel said. He plans to host regular tastings, book clubs and art workshops in the 1,300-square-foot space, which will also feature on-premises, self-serve wine by the glass so guests can sit, taste and learn rather than just grab a bottle and go.

Patel curates his selection based on his own tasting preferences, with an emphasis on small, international producers and lesser-known varietals. He aims to use the shop as an informal classroom, helping customers understand how climate and place shape what’s in the glass.
Art will also be central to the new store.
Patel, a portrait artist, plans to fill the walls with his own work alongside pieces from other local artists, who will receive 100% of any sales.
“I’d love to feature local artists’ work in the shop,” he said. “If they sell something, I don’t take any commission—the customer just contacts the artist directly.”
While the Old Trail shop is still under construction, customers can already browse the selection and order for delivery to Crozet through the Grape & Grain Exchange website, grapeandgrainexchange.net.
In other Old Trail Village leasing news, commercial real estate firm Cushman & Wakefield | Thalhimer announced a separate deal bringing Nelson Scoops to a 1,279-square-foot retail space in the same development.
